The daily vanity-plate decoder

Decode the plate.

Every vanity plate is a phrase in disguise. One new plate a day, six tries to say what it means, and a hint if you are still stuck after three.

How it works

Three steps, about a minute.

No tutorial, no tour. If you have ever read a plate at a red light and thought “wait, what does that say?”, you already know the game.
  • 01

    Read the plate

    Vanity plates cheat. Digits stand in for sounds and whole words: 8 turns into ATE, 2 into TO, 4 into FOR, and vowels just walk off the job.
  • 02

    Say what it means

    Type the phrase in plain English. Matching happens on our side: punctuation and spacing do not matter, and common alternate phrasings can count.
  • 03

    Six tries, one hint

    Three misses and a hint shows up. Win or lose, you get the meaning, the wordplay behind it, and a spoiler-free score to share.
Warm-up

Two you can already read.

Neither of these is today's plate. Today's plate is at the top of this page, and it is still unsolved.
  • I am grateful
    8 = ATE
  • Too fast for you
    2 = TOO · 4 = FOR
Streaks

You never need an account to play — the plate is open to everyone, every day. A guest streak just lives in one browser, and browsers forget.
  • Your streak, win rate and guess spread ride along to any device you sign in on.
  • Plays you already made as a guest merge into the account the first time you sign in.
  • Nothing to install — email and a password, or a one-tap link to your inbox.

Same plate, everywhere

One plate. Everybody. Every day.

Your friends are squinting at the exact same characters you are. Share the result as squares — tries and a difficulty badge, never the answer — and let them work for it.

A new plate lands every day at midnight UTC. Miss one and the streak starts over, which is the whole point.
